This IMEI(International Mobile Equipment Identity) is used by GSM operator network to identify whether your phone is a valid device and not a clone one or stolen one.
IMEI STRUCTURE AND FORMAT
Your GSM operator has power to stop the mobile phone that has an IMEI that was blacklisted.
So, by blacklisting the IMEI, even though the person who has stolen your mobile changes the SIM of the mobile phone, it will still cannot be used since the IMEI is unique to the mobile phone itself.
So, i suggest you to remember your mobile phone’s IMEI or store it safely somewhere.

Doing this you can find where your hand set is being operated even in case your sim card has been changed.
Step2:Note you can immediately use this IMEI number by calling your operator and tell them that your mobile phone got stolen or lost. When you will give the mobile phones IMEI number to the operator, the operator will block that mobile phone form using the operator’s network.
